Our Artwork Inspired by Yupik Designs
[Sculpture of a Seal]
NA-YU-Seal
This seal was incised into a wooden spoon by a Yupik artist. The animal's bladder, or inua, is depicted as this is where the animal's soul lives. The skeleton is very important because the native people's in the arctic believed that an animal was reborn through its bones. The skeleton thus symbolizes the rebirth of the animal. Every piece of meat had to be removed from the bones, or the lack of respect would cause animals to avoid the hunter in the future.
[Sculpture of Caribou]
NA-YU-Caribou
This caribou was incised into a wooden bowl by a Yupik artist. As with the seal (above), the depiction of the skeleton and bladder are very important.
